For the theme of the evening, Japan, we created one cocktail for the 600 visitors with sake, the Melting Snow, in a long drink glass with crushed ice, gin, peach liqueur and sake, and one with Japanese whiskey, the Harakiri Sour, in a tumbler glass with ice, Japanese whisky, lemon juice, sugar syrup, orange bitter and an orange zest.
signature cocktail
A signature cocktail is a unique or original cocktail that represents the nature of the person, organization or the establishment making the cocktail, or the theme of an event. In essence, it is the master’s metaphorical signature.
Signature cocktails often contain local ingredients and can be created or designed to represent a theme or color. Many cultures, states, cities, restaurants, bars, etc., have signature cocktails and they are the proud representatives of the people in the area.
A well-known example of a signature cocktail is the Mojito. Historians suggest that the Mojito was created when slaves working the fields at the end of the 19th century drank guarapo, rum and lime juice to end their day.
The local drink was mixed with the local lime fruit and sugarcane, which was everywhere on the sugar plantations.
Another popular legend is that an English pirate, an associate of Sir Francis Drake, made up a drink in Havana that was similar to the Mojito by mixing aguardiente, sugar, lime and mint as a remedy for the scurvy and dysentery plaguing the ship’s crew. Shortly after, a cocktail known as ‘El Draque’ was made with similar ingredients, became popular on Cuba.
