Responsible drinking

Tips & Tricks

Responsible drinking

We support responsible drinking. You may not expect such a statement on our website, but we want all our guests to have a fantastic experience and drinking excessively is not the way to make that happen. Responsible drinking is about more than limiting yourself to a certain number of drinks. It also means not getting drunk and letting alcohol control your life or your relationships. Being drunk and slouching will not make you any friends.

TIPS FOR SAFE DRINKING

1. Know your limit and plan ahead.

2. Eat food before and while you drink.

3. Sip your drink (more slowly).

4. Skip a drink from time to time and have a non-alcoholic drink instead (another good advice is to have a glass of water alongside your other drinks and sip the water in between drinking).

5. Beware of unknown drinks

6. Have a glass of water every now and then

TIPS FOR RESPONSIBLE DRINKING

Healthy men up to 65 years of age should limit themselves to:

  • No more than 4 drinks a day
  • No more than 14 drinks a week

Healthy women of all ages and healthy men above 65 should limit themselves to:

  • No more than 3 drinks a day
  • No more than 7 drinks a week

Due to their body composition, men and women respond to alcohol differently.

Physiologically speaking, women have more body fat than men, and fat contains less water to dilute the alcohol intake.

In addition, the male body also contains more of the chemical substance that is used to break down alcohol (alcohol dehydrogenase) before it enters the blood stream. So if a man and woman have the same weight and drink the same amount of alcohol, the women will be visibly tipsy more quickly.

Other habits that can help you be a responsible drinker include, among others:

  • Never drink and drive.
  • Have a designated driver when you drink. That means driving with someone in your group who didn’t drink, or taking a taxi or bus.
  • Don’t drink on an empty stomach. Have a snack or mean before and while you drink.
  • If you use medication, including over the counter medications, consult your doctor before you drink. Alcohol can affect the way your body uses certain drugs. A medication may not work correctly, or it can be dangerous or make you ill in combination with alcohol.

If alcohol abuse occurs in your family, you may run a bigger risk of developing alcohol problems yourself. Not drinking at all may be best for you.

CAN DRINKING RESPONSIBLY IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH?

No. Many people drink now and then. You may have heard about certain health benefits of drinking in moderation. For some of these benefits, there is more proof than for others. But none of them should be used as a reason for drinking.
